There appears to be a defect in the sp_estimate_data_compression_savings system stored procedure if you have a table with a column that does not conform to the rules for regular identifiers. According to Books Online, for identifiers that do not conform to the rules, those identifers must be enclosed in double quotes or square brackets. This action is not being performed by the system stored procedure. As such, if you process a table with a non-regular identifier as a column name youi will receive an Error 207 Invalid column name. Calls to COL_NAME resolve correctly, so it appears to be a problem only in this stored procedure.

I am filing a bug with the Product Team.

This release just provides a bit more meaningful feedback to the user when this condition occurs.

Thanks to MasterOz for pointing out the error...The script now correctly handles all mixtures of partitioned and non-partitioned indexes / tables

This release fixes an issue where I was incorrectly excluding databases that were set to 9.0 compatability level.
Instead, now I filter the server list, and validate hand entered server names to be sure that they are at least SQL Server 2008 or later.
Compression is only available on SQL Server 2008 or later.

Thanks to all for your feedback. Version 1.0.1.0 is now released and it contains the following changes:

The Connect To SQL Server dialog now supports typing in a server instance name. You can also select Browse for more to do the original network search for available SQL Servers
The Connect To SQL Server dialog now supports setting the Connection Timeout as well as the Execution Timeout
The results form has been reduced in size (1024x768) and scroll-bars appear as appropriate.
